A Fossil Colo Bus Skull from the Sudan (primates, Cercopithecidae)
نویسنده
چکیده
A fossil monkey skull recovered from the "Old Alluvium" of presumed Pleistocene age near Wad Medani in the Central Sudan is described. This find represents a variant of Colobus polykomos abyssinicus, a living species whose habitat is restricted to forest canopy. Since this skull is not abraded and is unlikely to have been water-transported more than a few kilometers to its site of burial, it provides evidence that continuous forest cover once reached northwest across the Sudan to the vicinity of Wad Medani. 2 Postilla YALE PEABODY MUSEUM N o . Partial skeleton of Theropithecus brumpti (Primates, Cercopithecidae) from the Chemeron Formation of the Tugen Hills, Kenya.
Here we describe a complete skull and partial skeleton of a large cercopithecoid monkey (KNM-TH 46700) discovered in the Chemeron Formation of the Tugen Hills at BPRP Site #152 (2.63 Ma). Associated with the skeleton was a mandible of an infant cercopithecoid (KNM-TH 48364), also described here. KNM-TH 46700 represents an aged adult female of Theropithecus brumpti, a successful Pliocene papioni...
متن کاملEvolutionary relationships of Macaca fascicularis fascicularis (Raffles 1821) (Primates: Cercopithecidae) from Singapore revealed by Bayesian analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences
Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) have a wide geographic distribution across mainland and insular Southeast Asia. The evolutionary history of long-tailed macaques has been examined extensively through comparison of phenotypic variation and by phylogenetic analyses of molecular genetic data. Nonetheless, the complex evolutionary history of M. fascicularis throughout Southeast Asia is no...
متن کاملMites of the genus Paracoroptes Lavoipierre, 1955 (Acariformes: Psoroptidae)--skin parasites of the African monkeys of the family Cercopithecidae (Primates).
Two new species of Paracoroptes Lavoipierre, 1955 (Acariformes: Psoroptidae: Paracoroptinae) are described: Paracoroptes miopithecus sp. n. from Miopithecus talapoin (Schreber) and Paracoroptes piliocolobus sp. n. from Piliocolobus badius (Kerr) (Primates: Cercopithecidae)--both are from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A key to all 6 species of the genus is provided and host-parasite rela...
متن کاملThe oldest Asian record of Anthropoidea.
Undisputed anthropoids appear in the fossil record of Africa and Asia by the middle Eocene, about 45 Ma. Here, we report the discovery of an early Eocene eosimiid anthropoid primate from India, named Anthrasimias, that extends the Asian fossil record of anthropoids by 9-10 million years. A phylogenetic analysis of 75 taxa and 343 characters of the skull, postcranium, and dentition of Anthrasimi...
متن کاملPatterns of macroevolution among Primates inferred from a supermatrix of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA.
Here, we present a new primate phylogeny inferred from molecular supermatrix analyses of size 42 kb containing 70% of missing data, and representing 75% of primate species diversity. The supermatrix was analysed using a gene-partitioned maximum likelihood approach to obtain an exhaustive molecular phylogenetic framework. All clades recovered from recent molecular works were upheld in our analys...
